Arlington is also convenient to DullesInternationalAirport and Washington's ReaganNational Airport. Being so central, most people visiting the D.C. area will travel through or near Arlington and don't realize that the area has so much to give and so much to enjoy. Arlington as a whole offers a variety of excellent hotels, shopping, governmental offices and sight seeing attractions such as Arlington NationalCemetery and the Marine Corps Memorial; however, the area also offers a variety of nightlife spots for just about any interest. Of all the areas of Arlington, perhaps one of the most inviting areas is found in the Clarendon neighborhood. Clarendon, located on and around Clarendon Boulevard - hence the name - is easy to get to from about any where. By car from the District of Columbia, take Highway 50 straight to Clarendon Boulevard. Come early as things start to happen fast. From the Metro stop, wander down Clarendon Boulevard and stop in Best Cellars (2855 Clarendon Boulevard- 703-741-0404). They have a tasting every day that generally includes a food pairing. The staff is fun and vibrant and knows their wine. There is also an extensive selection of affordable and frequently eclectic wines if you're in the mood for a bottle. If you'd prefer a different setting in which to sample some wine, venture out onto Clarendon and head just up the street from Best Cellars to Harry's Tap Room (2800 Clarendon Boulevard - 703-778-7788). Harry's Tap Room offers a variety of reasonably priced dishes prepared from fresh and organic ingredients. They have an open two level dining room and a great bar that has a popular happy hour. Come in a little early before the crowd and enjoy a number of wine offerings by the glass. In the winter months there's even quaint gas fireplace going. If you still have a taste for wine, just around the corner on Highland is the Eleventh Bar (1041 N. Highland Street - 703-351-1311) - Eleventh offers a number of wines by the glass and a variety of light appetizers. The lounge setting attracts a laidback crowd during the evening and provides a nice setting if you want a few drinks over a pleasant conversation. You may find yourself staying well into the evening. After a bit of wandering around and some wine, you'll likely be ready for a bite to eat. Clarendon offers a number of choices, all within in walking distance of each other. If you like Thai food, hit Sala Thai (2900 North 10th Street - 703-465-2900). Sala Thai has a comprehensive menu of traditional Thai dishes, all reasonably priced. They do a great Pa Nang! If you're with a crowd, order several of the specialty pizzas and share. If Greek fair is more your speed, try the Aegean Taverna (2950 Clarendon Boulevard - 703-841-9494). After dinner, Clarendon offers a number of options for the remainder of the evening. Whitlow's is deceptively large inside and serves food during the day, so if you get there early, you'll likely encounter the dinner crowd. However, late night, things are a bit different. There is always a good crowd. In the back you'll find several pool tables and up front is a nice size stage that draws some great acts, many that are on their way up. Just down the street from Whitlow's is the IOTA Club (2832 Wilson Boulevard - 703-522-8340). The Iota Club is one of the great live music venues in the D.C. area, booking some of the best independent acts touring today. The size of the club guarantees a great concert experience. Image Source: http://quoteszilla.com/travel-quotes-pictures/ Today it was declared by my children, not only at home multiple times, but also in public that I'm the meanest mom. I have never said, "I hate you" or "I don't like you" to my children... ever. I will say, "I love you, I just don't like this behavior." Last week, my girls and I were at Girl Scout Camp everyday. We hiked in the woods in 90 degree weather, got rained on, sat around a hot fire cooking food, made crafts, and earned lots of patches. We had a lot of fun that we pretty much wore ourselves to exhaustion. As soon as we arrived at home, the girls were to empty their bags, and go straight upstairs to shower. Then we would eat something edible for dinner and then we crashed. I was lucky to do one load of laundry, just so we could keep wearing our camp shirts everyday. Because of this chaotic schedule, my kids and I barely got enough sleep, which lead to all this mean talk from my children. The girls have been yelling and spitting at each other, and then just that fast, they can swirl around and be super nice. My 3-year-old started hitting me and yelling "no!" for everything I say. How did my children become so mean to me and I'm called the meanie? I think I figured it out. I treated my girls to ice cream one day and then their ears shut down for the rest of the afternoon. It was then I realized that I am too nice. How can I be too nice and mean all at once? I'm a mom, that's how. Are moms too nice? Maureen Healy, the creator of Growing Happy Kids, a worldwide organization committed to bringing out the best in children, says that parents who have a "wishbone" parenting approach fight with their kids "wishing" for their children's behavior to get better. We tend to feel guilty about our parenting because of the situation we deal with, such as divorce or working too much. "Parenting with a backbone takes inner strength," says Healy. You can be positive with your children but you must be firm and set healthy boundaries. Setting healthy boundaries takes practice, but the more you set clear boundaries and positive expectations for your children will get mature to be more capable and succeed in life. So what to do? Pay attention at your parenting style. Do you need to be more consistent? More firm or less strict? The goal is to find a robust balance of being positive and firm so your children can learn healthy boundaries and become a positive and successful adult. 5 boundaries to consider for practice: Be a good role model. Show your kids how to follow the rules. Set clear rules. Write them down and hang them up for the whole family to see. Set consequences the whole family will understand. Be consistent. Don't follow through with a consequence one day and "let it go" the next. It's confusing to kids and you will get resistance in return. Adjust the boundaries to be age appropriate. Nobody ever said raising childrens was trouble-free, that's why it takes practice. Setting clear, healthy boundaries for your children shows them that you want them to grow up to be a positive and successful adult, and that you love them.
